Carved Shell Cameo Set

This demi-parure is a carved shell cameo set. Its age is unknown but I purchased it from an elderly woman (87) who said it was her mother's. I estimate the age to be between 1920 and 1950. The roll over clasp was advertised as early as 1913 and available in 1920. The brooch measures 1 7/8 " by 1.5 inches. Including back pin it is nearly 1/2 thick.

The metal has retained its luster and shows no tarnish. It appears to have some gold content but no markings are on any of the pieces to indicate so.

Left and Right Faced Cameo Clip On Earrings

The earrings have a left and right facing cameo.

And clip on backs.

Each earring measures 3/4 inch x 1/2 inch.

Notice the shell color variation bleeding through on the back side of cameo brooch.

Note the uneven shell thickness. That can be seen from top to bottom and side to side.

Northwood "Beads" C1900

Northwood Bowl in the Beads Pattern c1900
Northwood's Bead Pattern with Back Lighting to Show Colors
Northwood's "Beads" pattern is only found on bowls. This bowl shows the relationship between carnival glass and light. Very strong color display!

Various back lights and natural lights enhance the iridescent treatment of carnival glass and the distinctive pattern of each piece. The Beads pattern is on the exterior of the bowl and shows through in this back lit photo.

Interior Beads Pattern of Northwood Marked Bowl c1900

The Northwood mark, an N encircled, is shown in the center along with a strawmark obtained in the production of the glass. Such strawmarks are typical in glass of this era. To me, they add to the unique character of each hand shaped piece.
Northwood "Beads" Exterior Pattern on Green Base Glass c1900

This bowl has the desirable green base glass. It has a small nick or "flea bite" on the bottom rim. It is so small it must be searched for. The Beads pattern is on the exterior of the bowl while the interior has a strong display of color.
Northwood Bowl C1900

Northwood's bowl has a strong array of colors. It displays beautifully, particularly if it has a relationship with a light source. In excellent condition for being 115 years old.

Stoneware Bottle from Grand Rapids, Michigan

JB Folger Stoneware Bottle Late Mid to Late 1800's
JB Folger bottles come from Grand Rapids, Michigan. This one is in excellent condition! John Baldwin Folger founded the JB Baldwin and Sons Bottling Company in the mid 1800's. Most of the bottles that I collect come from the mid west. I have one other JB Folger bottle besides this one.

Notice the rim is in excellent condition. There is some staining on the bottle to the right of the stamp in the mid section of the bottle. Such coloration is common.

Midcentury Bull in Brutalist Style

This stylized bull reminds me of cave art with its simple lines. I found others on line that call this style from Japan in the mid century as "Brutalist." I believe it is cast iron with a treatment added to the surface to create the rust, black, gold and brown coloration.

Primitive Two Piece Oak Set Back Cabinet

This two piece cabinet is hand built, estimate around 1900 or earlier. It has a message to deliver to Tomah, Wisconsin.
The hardware is all original and it has a working key. The left side door with the lock is slightly warped from being left ajar, however, it will close with the lock in place. The right hand door has a hook and eye closure at the bottom. The shelves have plate grooves at the back. Great for displaying collections, dishes, or storing homemade preserves. Might be used in any room in the house.

Franklin MacVeagh General Store May Flower Tea Counter Bin

Franklin MacVeagh was Secretary of State under President Taft from 1909 to 1913. At the end of his term, in 1913, he opened a wholesale grocery store in Chicago, Illinois. The store succumbed to the depression in 1932. Here is a lithographed bin that has survived from that era and location.
